To use functionalities of the Device Manager such as the ConfigManager or the Firmware Update, the tool must search for available devices.

Configuring Used Protocol

The Seaching is done using several configurable Protocols like our proprietary Device Detection, Profinet or EtherNet/IP.

1. Choose “File”->”Preferences” at the upper left side,

2. Select “Protocols” and choose the appropriate Protocol for “Scan for Devices”,

3. Apply these settings with “Apply and Close”.

Searching 

As depicted in the figure below, by clicking on “Networks” in the Network Navigator the available network interfaces are shown. Select the appropriate network by left clicking on it [1]. In the toolbar, the “Scan Network” button is now available and can be activated by left clicking on it [2].

The “Scan network” dialog will now open as shown below. The Industrial Communication Explorer will send search packets to the selected network interface and then wait for answers 10s. This time can be configured in the settings dialog (via File →  Preferences → Device Detection →Timeout in s). 

After completion of the process, the number of found devices is shown. Clicking on OK will close the dialog and add the found devices to the Network Navigator. By clicking on cancel, the dialog is closed and the found devices are discarded. The first available device will be selected after a successful scan.

To scan all available networks, select the “Networks” node in the Network Navigator and then click on the Scan symbol. This opens the “Scan network” dialog for each network one after the other.

After completion of the process, the number of found devices summarized for all network is shown. Clicking on OK will close the dialog and add the found devices to the Network Navigator. By clicking on cancel, the dialog is closed and the found devices are discarded. The first available device will be selected after a successful scan.
